Over the weekend we ran the Winter session of the Creative Fundamentals Photo Workshop. The course covers the fundamentals of photography starting with the tricky ideas of exposure.
Tricky Exposure
Over the years I have found many people (solid intermediates) who do not understand the exposure. ie How to make snow scenes come out white in the camera. Exposure is tricky!!
Drab Gray Snow
Years ago I stood behind an ‘experienced’ hobby photographer at Proulx Brother’s lab who was explaining that his uninspiring arctic winter photos were caused by the drab snowstorm weather… I kept quiet.
Really, his photos were underexposed because his scenes were filled with white snow that all cameras in the world (with built in meters) try to make a drab gray… unless you know how to compensate.
Bear Hug
The Creative Fundamentals photo course went well. I like the sound when a light bulb pops above a student’s head. One participant gave me a bear hug after she had a breakthrough! Oh, I do enjoy teaching. We follow up with critique on Wednesday.
