#407 The pirates and portraits

Aargh! Shiver me timbers.

We started the first winter session of Natural Light Portraits last week. A second session starts Wednesday.

One of our ProProgram students captured, erm, me looking like, erm, a pirate at the practical session on Saturday and took the liberty to have some fun with the photo in post production.

Hagen says:

Yesterday we had the main shoot portion of the Natural Lights workshop. One of the nooks I was photographing in had a great background. And Harry naturally cruised in to bestow some much needed wisdom 🙂

Anyway, with his mug, I instantly thought of pirates! I don’t need to explain why.

Erm, thanks Hagen, I think!!:

#406 Assignment Spotlight

Recently we were approached by business partners who wanted some portraits done to support their work. They wanted both traditional corporate headshots as well as some photos showing them discussing work while away from their office.

They were fun to work with and were pleased with the collection of work they will be using.

#404 Earning money: “Pay the Writer” by Harlan Ellison

Pay the Writer” featuring sci-fi writer Harlan Ellison was sent our way by Cynthia from PhotoBuddies.ca.

Cynthia says “While the ‘rant’ is about the way writers are treated, it is also applicable to photographers!!

Very applicable – sometimes – in the world of working photography.

If you are starting out please watch the video and take notes.

Thanks Cynthia!

#403 – Creative Fundamentals Photo Workshop

Over the weekend we ran the Winter session of the Creative Fundamentals Photo Workshop. The course covers the fundamentals of photography starting with the tricky ideas of exposure.

Tricky Exposure

Over the years I have found many people (solid intermediates) who do not understand the exposure. ie How to make snow scenes come out white in the camera. Exposure is tricky!!

Drab Gray Snow

Years ago I stood behind an ‘experienced’ hobby photographer at Proulx Brother’s lab who was explaining that his uninspiring arctic winter photos were caused by the drab snowstorm weather… I kept quiet.

Really, his photos were underexposed because his scenes were filled with white snow that all cameras in the world (with built in meters) try to make a drab gray… unless you know how to compensate.

Bear Hug

The Creative Fundamentals photo course went well. I like the sound when a light bulb pops above a student’s head. One participant gave me a bear hug after she had a breakthrough! Oh, I do enjoy teaching. We follow up with critique on Wednesday.

#401 Exposed! photo newsletter

Our latest Exposed! photo newsletter just hit the airwaves:

Six photo projects to keep you shooting

It’s that time of year again when gyms are flooded with new members, smokers are chewing their nails and grocery carts are overflowing with healthy fruits and vegetables. We all like to make resolutions, but statistics show we’re not always good at keeping them.

This year, make a resolution you’ll enjoy keeping and become a better photographer in the process: resolve to take more photos.

In this month’s Exposed! photo newsletter we offer some photo exercises to help fuel your creativity in 2010.

#400 – Pro Program review

One of our ProProgrammers – Nathalie Madore – is coming to the end of her path on the program and she has written a review of her time on the course.

Read her review of the ProProgram! C’est en francais.

What is the ProProgram?

The program is designed for those who wish to build enough business and photography experience to start their own business. We work towards a portfolio of work from which to market their work.

So far students have done well working towards their goals.
