Elmwood Art Exhibition at Ottawa Studio Works

Last year we hosted the 2012 Elmwood School’s art student’s annual show highlighting their hard work throughout the year. Looking at the work I would not have expected it to be from high school art students!! They consumed all that their art teacher, Heawon Chun, had to offer.

And they are back for another year! Budding artists from Elmwood School invite you to see their work in May at our photo studio – Ottawa Studio Works!

Details:
Vernissage – Friday, May 3rd; 7-9pm
May 3rd-12th, 2013.

Hours:
Wednesday-Friday: 12-6pm.
Saturday, Sunday: 10-4pm.
Monday, Tuesday: Closed.

2012 Elmwood Art Exhibition at Ottawa Studio Works

The Annual Elmwood Spring Art Show 2013 is a showcase of selected works from the Grade 9-12 programs, presented at Ottawa Studio Works to give the aspiring art students their first experience in the art world.

2012 Elmwood Art Exhibition at Ottawa Studio Works

The standards for the show are high, and the resulting caliber of the works is impressive.

Among the variety of works, the show includes plaster orbs conveying natural and surreal elements all at once.

Grade 9 students began with observational studies of nature to compose original designs, which were transposed into plaster using the ‘reductive process’.   In another project, they were challenged to reflect on their inner personal strengths and represent those in symbols, invented or researched, and rendered as a Watercolour Mandala composition.

The show’s works range from diminutive to very large, and include:
• Sculpture
• Painting
• Drawing
• Mixed Media
• Installation

Using the Mix Media, Installation, grade 10 – 12 students were led through various mark making exercises, and found-object sculpting to free them from conventional and potentially restrictive modes of drawing and sculpture.

Older students were opened to an understanding of the relevance and acceptance of mark making as a drawing in the contemporary framework of art.  Student’s experiments fashioned breathtaking drawings and found-object sculptures with their personal artistic signatures.

The show is open to the public.

#881 Open House at the Photo Studio

On Saturday we opened the doors to our Ottawa photo studio for our 3rd annual open house. It was fun.

Yes it was.
We tested a new format – opening the doors for the afternoon AND evening at the suggestion of people who couldn’t make the evening.

Two things happened:
• We had a great turnout – bigger numbers than before
• It was less packed than past years as people were spread out over more time.

Thanks everyone for last night’s fun:
• Our students thank-you for admiring their successes
• SPCA dogs (and cats) thank-you for the gift of your donations
• And we thank-you for your support.

Without your purchases of art/cards, enrolment in our workshops and hiring of our services the fun that was last night could not keep happening.

Each one of your purchases is very important to us and helps keep us in business!

Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you!

#848 Ottawa Photo Exhibition Fills the Studio

On Friday night one of our ProProgram graduates filled our photo studio with her courageous portraits of cancer conquerors. Lou Truss‘ show, Faces and a Cause, then filled our studio with people.

Lou’s portraits of young women who had defeated breast cancer started with a meeting with Katie. Remember Katie?

The show was a success. At times people were jockeying at the door to get in.

For me, one of the best parts was seeing the smiling women within the portraits, live, beside their likeness on the wall.

Another good part was the money raised for Young Adult Cancer Canada. Thanks to everyone that contributed.

Come walk the streets of Istanbul is a collection of photographic images from four Istanbul neighborhoods: Tarlabaşı, Eyup, Galatasary and Taxim.

The featured photographer is a teacher and photographer who spent 3 years living and working in Istanbul.

Turkey Photo Exhibition

“Come walk the streets of Istanbul” ©

In Istanbul, there is a café that has all the original glass, wood and brass fixtures from its construction in the 1840.  The walls are decorated with large tile mosaics depicting two of the four seasons.  The tiles were shipped over from France, but two seasons did not survive the voyage, so only spring and autumn are displayed.

Here at the Café Markiz is where I enjoyed my first Turkish coffee, served with a glass of water and a piece of Turkish delight.  Proper Turkish coffee is rich and smooth, with creamy foam on top, served in a small espresso cup with a saucer.

Turkey Photo Exhibition

“Come walk the streets of Istanbul” ©

You have to be still when you drink it, because moving around will disturb the grounds and muddy the flavour.  It has to be savoured because the cups are small and you can’t drink it all the way to the bottom.  It is not really like coffee at all – more like a rich, sweet dessert – like a truffle – to be enjoyed at the end of a meal, or as a special treat late in the afternoon when you need a boost of energy.

I loved it so much that I had my Turkish colleagues teach me proper technique and we took turns making Turkish coffee for the office.  It became a friendly competition – who was closest to perfecting their technique?

Turkey is filled with many such experiences for those who are willing to slow down, be still and embrace the unexpected; the beauty of the landscape, the layers of history, the mixtures of modern and ancient, the variety of food and regional delicacies, and most rewarding and beautiful of all, the warmth, generosity and civility of the people… A country with many flavours.

The collection of photographs in this exhibition is a visual short story of my experience with the human landscape of Istanbul.  So, come take a walk with me.”

#837 Young Cancer Survivors Photo Exhibit @ Ottawa Photo Studio

It’s coming up fast.

Lou Truss introduces you to the faces of some courageous young women. Her show, “Faces and a Cause,” showcases young women who have fought breast cancer.

Cancer Survivor Photo Exhibition Ottawa

© Lou Truss - courageous cancer survivors!

Lou says:

My father was diagnosed and died quite suddenly with Cancer eleven years ago.

Since then I’ve always wanted to raise awareness about this horrendous disease, and my photography seemed like the fitting avenue to go down. The idea photographing women who have survived Breast Cancer came about when Harry Nowell photographed Katie Evans.

I met Katie and talked to her about Breast Cancer and how she dealt with the treatment. She blew me away with her courage and strength.

It also blew me away when I found out how young she was when she was diagnosed.

Cancer Survivor Photo Exhibition Ottawa

© Lou Truss - courageous cancer survivors!

Meeting Katie was a turning point for me. I then decided to photograph women who have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

I’m amazed that women in their early twenties are now being diagnosed. When you are in your 20’s you think you’re invincible, you can live forever. Women in their 40’s + get Breast Cancer!

I never checked myself when I was in my 20’s. Having a young daughter has made me more aware that she needs to check herself when she’s older.

The charity I chose to support is Young Adult Cancer Canada which is close to Katie’s heart.

The women I photographed are amazing.

They are incredibly strong, beautiful women and I feel incredibly honoured to have been able to capture their images.

Come celebrate the show, meet courageous women, share experiences, donate, laugh and live.

#835 Thank-you!

A big thank-you to everyone who came to see and learn from the Watershed exhibit in Chelsea this weekend. We had visitors from the municipality of Chelsea, Hendrick Farm, Orleans photo club, Club Polarisé, photo students, neighbours and art buyers. People came from far away to see the largest showing of Watershed work to date.

Thanks to Becky and Reid and Susan for helping us take the show down at the end of the weekend before the rain came!

We will be showing the work by appointment at our photo studio within a week and will be announcing a show at a gallery soon for the fall. Interested in seeing the work? Let us know by email.

We will also be showing the work of Lou Truss at the studio in September – stay tuned for an announcement soon!

#829 Back from away…

We took some R&R last week at a B&B in the Laurentians – no camera (ie no photos), just charging the batteries.

Here’s what’s coming up this week:

• We will announce a new seminar in our Creative Business Seminar Series.

• A social with the ProProgram students.

• Our Online Photo Program members get their monthly photo challenge after exploring last week’s exploratory  lesson. See last month’s online photo successes.

• Preparing for the Watershed Exhibit in Chelsea – very close to the watershed itself!

Stay tuned – lots of fun coming!
