#621 World Press Photo 2011 + Photojournalism Presentation

Has it been a year already? Almost. This summer Ottawa welcomes back the World Press Photo exhibit. It’s a great chance to see some work by some of the best photojournalists in the world. And this year we have a bonus – a talk with Ottawa photojournalist Blair Gable at Ottawa Studio Works.

World Press Photo Exhibit Ottawa

The exhibit is put on by a Dutch not-for-profit and highlights work by photojournalists telling stories of tragedy and hope.

Ottawa dates have already been released. The show runs in August at the Canadian War Museum.

We had a good turnout last year! Just like last year, we invite you to see the event as a group.

This year we have a presentation arranged by Ottawa photojournalist Blair Gable who will talk and exhibit photography from the first 10 years of work as an editorial photographer – from community newspapers to international news wires.

Social Documentary Photographer Brings Story of Calcutta Boxers to Ottawa

Close to 100 people squeezed through our studio on Preston Street throughout the evening Saturday night.

They came to see some fine photo art and to learn more about underprivileged female boxers in Calcutta. Guests included people from Ottawa Magazine, Canadian Geographic, Library & Archives Canada, art photography collectors and photo fans.

The event, hosted at Ottawa Studio Works, was part of a one-night exhibit of award-winning social documentary photographer, David Trattles.

Dave has a unique ability to find the extraordinary in the ordinary. But the photos are only one-part of the story. Hearing him speak about his work really reflects the passion he has for his subjects.

Trattles’ show included a 45 minute presentation on his work photographing the “boxing ladies” of Calcutta, a group of young women using boxing to get themselves out of the slums. Trattles spent many months following the women and chronicling their story on traditional film cameras.

Dave’s prints speaks volumes. His story telling adds magic to the still photos. He tells stories no one else is telling.

Trattles has over 20 years experience in social documentary photography shooting for a long list of clients including aid agencies, prominent magazines and individual projects.

He’s had a busy month. He returned in the last few days from a month of shooting, exploring and cycling for people stories in India.

But he returned to New York City to photograph for Bike New York (an amazing cycling, social event in the Big Apple).

He arrives in Ottawa this week for his photography classes and exhibit at OttawaStudioWorks.com with fresh stories and new visions.

His photo workshop is always well attended leaving students with new photo ideas and sore smile/laugh muscles (it’s an entertaining class!)

His photo exhibit on Saturday May 7th features work from around the world exploring people’s stories. At 9pm he shows a free presentation of the Boxing Ladies – a collection of work about poor Muslim women looking to create a better life for themselves through boxing.

Guaranteed fun.

#576 Ottawa Studio Works – Open House: Thank-you!

A BIG, BIG thank-you for making our first open house so memorable!

We had two evenings of festivities and many generous supporters that helped us celebrate our new photography studio based in central Ottawa.

People grooved to the tunes of DJ Ron LaVoie and ate the scrumptious Ottawa Studio Works cupcakes baked by past student (and fine baker) Nancy on Friday.

Our designer, Roberta G, below, was very excited to see her design work made into food!

On Saturday night the celebration continued with some guests returning for their second night of fun!

By the end of the two night open house we were pretty pleased with the response to our new photo gallery, studio, artwork, photo classroom and community space on Ottawa’s Preston St.

We also raised hundreds of dollars and many pounds of food for the dogs (and all animals in need!) at the Aylmer SPCA and Ottawa Humane Society.

Big thanks to everyone else who helped make it such a success: Nancy and her cupcakes, Ron LaVoie’s DJ service, Bev Webster, Louis Helbig, Roberta, Alain, Caitlin and all the past and future clients, students, supporters, colleagues and friends at HarryNowell.com and OttawaStudioWorks.com.

Biscuit and Tigger say thanks to everyone who helped us help the dogs.

#575 Reminder and a thank-you!

First, a big THANK-YOU to the continued support of our sponsors that help keep this blog possible. Please visit Patrick Gordon Framing – our sponsor of the month.

#513 World Press Photo Review

Last night we brought a group of approximately 30 photo fans – a mix of clients, students, colleagues and relative strangers – to the Canadian War Museum to see the World Press Photo Exhibition.

Background

The Exhibit has been organized by a non profit group in the Netherlands to highlight work done by front line photojournalists and social documentary photographers risking their necks to document stories of tragedy and hope.

This Year’s Crop

As usual the Exhibit delivered some magnificent photos and some gut wrenchingly horrific photo stories.

World Press Photo Exhibit Ottawa

Some that stood out in Harry’s mind:

• Underwater shot of a bird catching a fish – close up and amazing

Paul Nicklen‘s antarctic wildlife extravaganza

• Sports features

• A story on abattoirs bringing reality to the neatly packaged meat counter of your supemarket

• Tragedies from Israeli/Palestinian troubles, African drug deals, South American tragedies, etc, etc. These were the hardest to consume and made my gut ache.

Controversy!
Last night I was asked my opinion and to interpret the 1st and 2nd place winners in different categories.

How could that win?!” someone asked. The overall winner was of a woman on top of a building chanting to protest the Iranian election results in 2009. The photo was simple.

True, some photos were not necessarily visually the most magnificent but I encouraged attendees not to judge just the physical photo but to remember the context of the exhibition – Press Photos. The photos are part of a story. What made the story? What went into capturing the photo?

Discussion

A smaller group reconvened on Preston Street to discuss the merits of what we had just seen. Lively conversations and many smiles ensued.

Thanks for coming. See you again next year for the 2011 show.

The Exhibition ends this weekend – Sunday, August 29th. If you have not been I suggest you get yourself to the Canadian War Museum in a hurry!!
