#921 Photo/Arts Awards and Other News

We started this feature a few weeks back – some posts discovered from photo sources I like to check on the ‘net.

This week I found:
France Rivet’s Polar Horizons research (& photo project) of five Innuit featured in European zoos 132 years ago: In the footsteps of Abraham Ulrikab.” We’re especially proud – France Rivet is a graduate of our ProProgram!

Hasselblad photo award (worth $big) awarded to Catalan photographer Joan Fontcuberta for his “30-year achievement of constantly investigating and questioning the photographic medium” according to Photo District News.

• Canada Council for the Arts announces the Governor General’s Awards in Visual & Media Arts.

Congratulations all round!!

#920 Upcoming Photo Workshops and Classes

We have our spring line-up of photo courses and workshops lined up.

Coming soon we will be announcing some summer and fall photo fun and are looking for some input – what do YOU want to learn photographically?

Spring Classes
This spring is shaping up nicely. At time of writing there is one spot left in our classic Creative Fundamentals Photo Class – it’s been filling up regularly since 2001 because we’ve figured out ways to help people demystify the mysteries of the camera.

Our spring offerings with Louise Tanguay are filling nicely – last year her Macro course filled  early!!

#919 “Photography for Communications Professionals” Photo Course

Many years ago we got asked to run a photo course for people in communications departments.

It seems many communications departments:
• need regular photos.
• don’t always have a budget to hire a photographer.
• end up with poor photos from well-meaning but inexperienced staff.

Event Photography Ottawa

Photographing Events

This request turned into Photography for Communications Profressionals – a scheduled workshop in November and a Custom Course option for specific groups throughout the year, but especially in the spring!

Last week we ran a PCP course for a small group (and have another course lined up this week.) There were some nerves at the beginning but by the end of the day results and smiles glowed.

Thanks again for your patience during the course. I learned a lot and am excited to practice the techniques!” PCP Partcipant

We offer a theoretical component in the morning with practical exercises (see below) in the afternoon that simulate the challenges of workplace photography! We also cover ‘challenges’ faced by ‘comms’ departments – consent forms, copyright, usage rights, archiving, etc.

On our photo course © M Savka - Harry teaches participants a traditional portrait technique - blurring the background: "Ok, see how the background gets blurred, bringing attention to your main subject?!"

See details of the PCP course (2013 dates have yet to be set for November) or info about the Custom Course.

#918 Value of Photography (& creative talent) – Three Recent Stories

Last week I read three stories about the challenges of creative business. See links below.

One is local and all are a bit worrying. They face the realities of photography ten years after the web and digital cameras became mainstream.

Since digital cameras made photography seem more accessible and the web made sourcing photos easier than ever the perceived value of photography has plummeted!

It’s been an interesting challenge to explain the vast difference between the many levels of photos and photo services offered.

And it’s been an even tougher challenge to get people to pay sustainable rates for high quality photography work. Sigh…

Some of the stories:
1. Photographer vs Big Business
Local Ottawa photographer Barbi Cameron of Barabara Ann Studios butted heads with a prominent radio station when they used her photo in a promotion without appropriate licensing. The story went kablooie (over 4000 FB shares in a week!) through social media channels.

The situation is jaw-droppingly bad!

See the post on her Facebook page.
Read another version of the story here.

2. NYC Photo Blogger vs DKNY
On our Facebook page we shared Barbi’s story and one of our readers added this similar (but slightly less bad) story of unlicensed photo usage. Another story of inappropriate photo usage.

3. Writer offered to write for free – Atlantic Magazine
A sad story of the perceived value of another creative outlet.  Thanks to veteran photojournalist, Rod MacIvor for sharing this one.

The GOOD News
From what I have seen the pendulum is starting to swing back to where it should be – people are starting to recognize good photography has costs and there is a difference in photos and photo services. Phew.

Fun video – “Pay the Writer”
I have posted this before but it is worth re-posting. Writer, Harlan Ellison discusses the value of his work. Makes me smile! WARNING – some poopy language!

#915 What’s going on in photo? Check out new Photo Facebook Page

I’ve had a presence on Facebook for a while – it’s been a mix of personal and photo fun.

#914 Perspective on Photo Perspective

Last month we offered our regular monthly newsletter and offered a critique session to the homework challenge we offered.

February’s newsletter was all about perspective – how to show depth in your two-dimensional photos.

Al G, who’s taken many of our workshops, gave his perspective on the subject. We like it! A lot.

Thanks Al. Stay tuned for March’s newsletter, homework challenge and opportunity for critique! Join the photo newsletter list.

#913 Round-up and a BIG THANK-YOU! – Media and Celebrity Photo Contest

“WOW,” popped in my head as I stood in the quiet, empty studio late Saturday night. Saturday was the finale of a very fun photo contest and campaign to raise awareness and $dollars for the Ottawa Food Bank.

On Saturday we opened the doors to celebrate the photo efforts of Ottawa’s media, celebrity elite, as well as, the general public. We challenged them to photograph “What I love about Ottawa/Gatineau” and they rose to the test!

Many people flowed through the studio doors including:
• Mayor Jim Watson
• Ottawa Citizen’s Peter Simpson
• CBC’s Alan Neal
• Ottawa Magazine’s Sarah Brown and Jane Corbett
• Public contest winner, Christophe Ledent
… and many, many more.

The photos were auctioned and should now be on their way to beautifying the new admirer’s walls.

Bidding started early – the first person showed up before we were open (I was shovelling the front step with our young son perched on my hip!) and talked her way into an early bid because she REALLY wanted a chance to purchase Sandy Sharkey’s crows and this was the only time she could make it. And it continued all day.

$1529.85 was raised  for the Ottawa Food Bank.
That supports a lot of families directly and indirectly!

#908 – New Perspectives Photo Newsletter + Critique Option!

Our photo newsletter hits the airwaves today and with it comes a new option based on the successes of our Online Photo Program – a photo critique!

New Perspectives
Photos are supposed to depict what we see but they cannot show three dimensions.

That’s a problem!

But there are ways to show depth perspective within a photo – and this week we offer photo tips to help you create better photos with depth – read the whole article.

Photo Perspective - tips

Photo Perspective - tips on depth

New option – photo critique!
This month we are drawing from the successes of our online photo program – people like the program’s video lessons, notes, feedback from the group but they LOVE the group video critique of member’s photos:

Preview an Online Program critique session from the Online Program’s “Closer” challenge. Directs to YouTube…

So, as an introductory offer we are will critique your newsletter homework through a group critique video for $5. See the newsletter for details.
