#686 Creative Fundamentals Photo Class

We recently finished our longest running, most popular workshop with a critique session at our Ottawa photo studio.

It’s been running for 11 years and keeps attracting people either as a Custom Course or a group course. Why?

Creative Fundamentals delivers the fundamentals of modern, digital photography in easy to learn chunks. And it makes people smile – we make it accessible and fun.

Below are some photos from the course:

#684 ProProgram Graduate – Student Success!

About 18 months ago Mercedes enrolled in our Creative Fundamentals photo class. She enjoyed it enough that she became interested in our ProProgram. For Mercedes, the ProProgram enticed her to help strengthen her résumé in the arts field. And she dove in, eager to learn.

And learn she did!

She soaked up photo classes and pursued shadowing opportunities, establishing important contacts and experience in arts fields. Mercedes has just graduated from the ProProgram. Her photo skills have developed. New doors have opened for her and she’s found a new love of film photography.

Enough from me. Mercedes shares her Photo Program experience:

Harry Nowell Photography Inc.’s Professional Program (ProProgram) was a definite turning point in my personal and professional lives. Personally, it provided me with the knowledge and skills I had always wanted to acquire, even as a hobby photographer. It gave me the background I was lacking to produce better photos and to overcome my fear of film and to overcome the technical challenge of using a camera. I feel more confidant about my ability to capture an image, a moment, a memory.

Professionally, I feel that my eye has been trained in a different way than what was taught in my Communications program in university. Instead of simply analyzing a photo from its marketing perspective, I now know how to evaluate it’s aesthetic and technical qualities as well. Moreover, I am competent at manipulating or modifying an image if and when necessary. Naturally, this is very valuable to me as a communications professional. In this sense, I have become more equipped to cover a work-related event or take on a private contract, if the need should arise. In addition, I am more aware of the realities surrounding the career of a photographer and this enables more constructive dealings with photographers hired on through and for professional functions.

The format of the ProProgram is rigorous yet very convenient as it is flexible. There is a good balance of theory, hands-on learning, practical exercises and homework and professional coaching. One must be self-motivated, but this is an ideal program for professionals looking to redirect or to refresh their skills or for a serious hobby photographer looking for more training. Harry’s teaching is efficient and kind, positive and constructive and his workshops are organized while still allowing plenty of room for creativity. That’s the point, isn’t it? Lastly, there is a wonderful support system put in place for all ProProgrammers to discuss and help each other through every step of the program.

As a recent graduate of the ProProgram, I am currently working on my very first extensive photo project and am working towards a show. I don’t want to give too much away right now, but let’s just say it addresses one of my passions: dance. Follow my blog for updates. Stay tuned!

Good work Mercedes! Check her blogs:

#681 Baby photos revisited

Remember Daniel?

He and his wife were waiting for a baby to arrive this summer.

While they waited Daniel’s wife found our website and asked us about a “How-to-take-baby-photos” custom course… We spent half a day going over photography’s fundamentals and I brought in a wee model for him to practice at our studio.

Well, yes, the happy couple now have a beautiful baby boy! I heard from Daniel last week. He was pretty excited:

… and when he was 7 days old we produced his first photo shooting session. I’m very satisfied with the results and Mommy is very, very happy.
Daniel’s photos of his son are presented in this blog post.

I’m pretty pleased at his successes after his Custom Course, too! He did very well.

I developed the curriculum for our fundamentals course over 11 years ago. It’s based on almost 20 years of photo and teaching experience. Other workshops grew from there. It makes me smile to see our student’s successes!

Congratulations Daniel & Mommy & baby!

#677 Student Success – photo class graduate Scott Martin

A couple of years ago I got a call from Scott Martin – he was interested in photography in a big way. After much hard work Scott graduated from our ProProgram and many of our photo classes.

His interests were in sports & music. After networking, shooting and putting in some time, Scott is starting to see his work pay off.

He’s been following the local music scene for a few years now – posting news and photos to SpotlightOttawa.com – including coverage of Live 88.5‘s “Big Money Shot“. Scott’s photography caught the music station’s attention and his work is gracing their annual album cover for the Big Money Shot.

Read about Scott’s successes.

It always makes me smile to see our students succeed – Not bad for someone who started shooting in the last few years!

#676 Custom Photo Class – success

Recently we ran a Custom Photo Class in Ottawa for Sarah and two friends who were looking to learn the basics of digital photography.

We arranged the photo session and started dishing out the lessons from Creative Fundamentals, very gently at first and more challenging as the lessons were learned.

We started with the very basics, moved to exposure and then some advanced exposure:

We played with depth of field – controlling blur with aperture:

And controlling blur using the shutter speed:

We also learned the ideas of composition to tie it all together:

All in all these new photographers ended the photo class with some magnificent photos.

Not bad, eh?!

Creative Fundamentals usually runs three times a year – fall, winter and spring.

Our next group session starts next week.

Custom courses are available almost anytime…

What they said:

We all had a great time on Friday. Thank you for a great course!

It was wonderful & exciting. I’ve always thought of myself as an impossible photographer. The course has left me with the confidence, patience & motivation to try and capture those photos I keep seeing. I appreciated your patience and the time you gave the three of us to ensure we understood.

We all raved about how lucky and grateful we were to have learnt from you, your knowledge & experience.”

And thank-YOU, Sarah and friends, for the fun and for sharing your photos on our photo blog! Your comments make me blush!

#652 Custom Photo Classes – Student Success

We regularly get calls from people who cannot make it to our regularly scheduled photo workshops in the Ottawa area.

Soooo, we offer most of our photo classes as Custom Courses allowing people to learn the material offered on our workshops at a pace and schedule that suits them.

Recently we ran two sessions for individuals that wanted to learn about specific elements of photography.

Daniel is soon to be a new father and he missed an opportunity to learn about photographing children so his wife sent him on our Custom Course tailored to his soon-to-be new duties as baby photographer!

We put him through the paces of our Creative Fundamentals geared towards photographing babies, newborns and children and we brought in a special little cutie for the final part of his session:

For the second session Bernadette asked us to cover Creative Fundamentals and an intro to macro photography. She is only in Canada for a month and contacted us to help her. We set her course based on her photo wishes – she wanted to learn about landscapes and close-ups:

#649 Bike Race Photo Safari Review

Last week we ran the Bike Race Photo Safari – we had a good turnout and people were challenged by the fast paced fun.

Ottawa Bike Race Photo Safari

Participants learned about isolating riders full frame (and in focus), stealing facial expressions from speedy cyclists, accentuating the speed with some panning and telling the story from the start/finish line.

Applaud the participant’s photos in this post – they did really well! They also sent their safari thoughts:

Harry’s many tips (focusing, exposure, ways to capture cyclists) were so simple and easy to understand and yet made a huge impact on my images!” Sarah

“Harry, you are constantly coming up with innovative workshops.  This Safari was brilliant!  It gives us seasoned photographers opportunities to shoot something different and brush up on our skills.  (ahem…  exposure).

Thanks so much for being Harry. You are always so consistent with making sure everyone understands the concept and getting it in our cameras. I have been to a number of workshops and the instructor is just busy getting his own shots, really. You are the best instructor out there.” Cheryl (ed note: Cheryl makes me blush!! Thanks Cheryl)

“I quite enjoyed it, it was the perfect race for a safari and I picked up some good tips for achieving manual focus.  You have an excellent teaching style and will definitely take more courses from you in the future.” Jeff

#646 Where are they now?

I met Hagen Hohn almost two years ago when he signed up for his first photo classes based in Ottawa. He was keen. So keen that he enrolled in our ProProgram.

Hagen Hohn photography

He took to the program well – taking many classes, meeting regularly for sessions to discuss his advancement and pursuing some shadowing with others in the industry. Hagen quickly developed good skills and followed his passion towards cars and photography. He graduated from the program in 2010.

Hagen Hohn photography

We still connect regularly and I recently asked him to share what he is up to now. He answered, below:

With the start of the summer ‘car’ season, I’ve been pretty busy trying to get as much face-time with as many people in the car enthusiast world as possible. That means hitting as many of the show-and-shines, car shows and events as possible. And there are a lot of them: 33 car clubs in the Ottawa valley and some special interest groups adds up to an average of 8 events each week. I’ve also made several presentations to local car clubs, on how to improve their own car photography.

Building my portfolio and continuing to develop my style has also been a focus through the summer. In addition to the print portfolio, I am working at continuously evolving and changing the content and photos on the web page.

Finally, the printing business I have targeted towards photographers, has done fairly well, and from the feedback I’ve gotten, clients seem to be happy.

Overall, the summer is tracking to my 5 year plan: two large weekend long jobs and a few individual clients have allowed me to ensure I am tracking to client and market expectations.

Visit Hagen’s site and blog and join us in cheering for his passion and business!

#634 Student Success

Last year I met a new student on one of our photography classes. He enjoyed the course and seems to have got hooked on photography! Kevin asked about our ProProgram and we developed a Custom Program that suited his goals. Over almost a year he worked hard to develop technically and creatively.

Kevin worked hard through many of our courses but also traveled far to learn from André Gallant – read Kevin’s review of that East Coast workshop.

Kevin started a website, photo blog and worked towards his photo goals. He is now preparing for his first Fine Art Photography Exhibition.

Listen to Kevin’s version of his progress:

One evening, a little over a year ago, I was sitting at my computer and thought to myself that I should take a course in photography. I had owned an SLR for over twenty years and had made the move to digital several years earlier but in all this time I had really only dabbled, never having taken any training.

Over the past year, I have taken many more workshops with Harry and through his pro-program he’s been my personal coach, mentor and friend. Though it is sometimes hard to take the critical feedback, Harry calls it as he sees it, and I have discovered in hindsight that he’s generally right on the money.

Student Success - Photo course

In just one year, with near constant shooting, I have completed Harry’s Pro-Program. I have seen great advancement in my skills that I would simply not have achieved on my own and I have made many new friends that share my passion for photography.  I am proud of my work and progressing towards a studio show and sale; the future looks bright!  Thank you Harry!

#632 Busy Weekend of Photo Workshops

We had a busy weekend of photo classes at HarryNowell.com and our photography studio – OttawaStudioWorks.

Christine Denis led some parents through the practical session of Photographing Your Children. I saw one student as she finished and she was beaming – that’s a good thing!

I taught the first half of Intro to Film and Darkroom photo workshop. Students were excited and challenged by cameras with no digital preview. Alex Leblanc showed them the light in the darkroom.

And J David Andrews braved the elements to bring photographers face to face with some furry challenges in our Landscape and Wildlife photo workshop. I heard from a few students with glowing photos.
