#344 Creative Fun – students – Part 1

On Wednesday night we finished the first section of our Creative Fundamentals Photography Workshop with the critique session – it’s always fun to see what different people choose to capture and how they interpret similar opportunities.

The second session starts Thursday – a fresh, full group of eight students.

Below, a selection of student photos – more tomorrow.

#332 Different Perspectives – Student Successes

We met last night for the last session of ‘school’ for the students on the Sport Photo Workshop. The evening was spent reviewing and critiquing student’s work from the Peanut Polo Cup that supported Canine Rescue.

Photo Review

One of the best things about a workshop is the ability to see how other photographers interpreted, shot, and edited the work. It always amazes me how a class of students presented with exactly the same material and opportunities will end up with such different work.

Differences

Different people are attracted to different subjects. They have different interests. Their styles and techniques produce different effects. This all produces a wildly interesting and diverse body of work presented to the group.

Something New for Everyone!

Years ago I had an intermediate student take Creative Fundamentals and he did well picking up the technical details. But at the critique session his jaw dropped. While his photos were good he couldn’t believe what his co students had produced. He had cruised the course a bit but woke abruptly when he realized the creative opportunities he had missed.

He left the workshop with a whole new look on photography. His fundamental photo skills were good and the course helped him soar creatively.

So, here are some photos from a few of the Peanut Polo Cup students:

#322 Student Success

In a week and a half students are testing their sports photo skills at Augusta Stables’ annual Peanut Polo Cup – thundering horses playing polo.

I got an email from a former student with exciting news.

The Peanut Polo organizer, Kathy Mills, will be interviewed on Bob FM 93.9 on Fri Aug 28th, at approx 7:20am. Listen to the interview by Sandy Sharkey.

Sandy, former photo student, was invited to a media launch for the Peanut Polo Cup last weekend and tested her photo skills, below. Pretty good, eh? Check Sandy’s blog for more photos. Nice work Sandy!

#305 Student Portraits

Last week I taught a Custom Course based on the Natural Light Portrait Course and posted a few of my photos of photographer and model.

Nathalie’s portraits are fun and well done. She has sent some of her photos to present to the world:

Nathalie is working quickly through her Pro Program for those looking to make photography their profession. Her website is under development – we will be announcing her launch as it comes.

Nice work, Nat!

#299 Student Success

I just got an email from Susie Osler, ceramic artist, and was excited about her latest successes!

Susie’s work has developed through extensive training and continued development of her work. Her accomplishments are many.

Coming up is the opening for her Fieldwork Project. Also be sure to tune in for her interview with CBC Ottawa’s ‘In Town and Out’  airing Saturday morning between 6 and 9 am!

Susie contacted me last winter as she wanted help documenting her ceramic work for promotion, galleries and juried shows. We designed a Custom Course based on the ‘Photography for Art Promotion‘ presentation I did for the Ontario Craft Council to help her shine.

We’re proud of her continued success! Yay, Susie!

#288 More student race photos

Ok… this is the last set, it seems, of student photos from our sport sessions photo workshop based around motion and bike racing at Ottawa’s NRC training race hosted by Ross Knight.

Students have progressed nicely. We have our critique session this week. See more photos below.

Missed this workshop? Consider the next Sport photo Workshop in August or Creative Fundamentals in September.

Thanks to the participants!

#278 Student Success!

Last week we finished the critique session of the Urban Landscapes Photo Workshop in Ottawa, Canada.

Students progressed over the course as we travelled to different locations for new challenges.

While exploring the strong lighting challenges in this underground wonderland Prasad pushed his limits capturing some dynamic action with some dynamic lighting:

Nice work Prasad!
