#381 Back by Popular Demand – David Trattles Photo Workshop

In October David Trattles lead a group of photographers on a social documentary adventure, helping them use their cameras to tell stories.

The workshop was popular drawing people from afar – we had calls from Toronto and Europe about Dave’s fall course. There were more people interested than there were spaces.

It was so popular we have to hold it again – and the dates have been set:

May 6, 7, 8, 9, 2010

Each session involves three hours with Dave (evenings and weekends) as he guides you through the art of story telling with your camera.

Dave does things differently! He does not lecture or teach f-stops, exposures and photoshop. He helps you see how to see, how to tell a story.

Each session includes, discussion, critique of your work, narrative and an assignment for you to complete for the next day.

David’s work has taken him around the world and has been published by a long list of clients.

David Trattles’ Social Documentary and Photojournalism Workshop Details

One October student said:

Harry – thank you for introducing me to David.  This course has changed the way I take photographs.  More importantly it has changed the way I see myself and the world around me.  It’s not about WHAT we see in the world through the rectangular viewfinder but HOW we see the world.  My journey through photojournalism will begin with a smile and a hand shake, not the sound of a shutter.

This is me.  This is what I want to do.

#379 Christmas Pet Photos with Santa

Dogs, dogs, dogs.

I love ’em.

Three years ago I lost dear old Tigger. Last year we adopted a fine mixed mutt from the SPCA of West Quebec. Sigh.

We now offer a few photo hours to help the West Quebec SPCA raise some funds for the necessary work they do.

The Scoop

From 11:30 – 2:30 on December 5 and 12th Harry Nowell Photography Inc. will be photographing your fine furry friends  at the SPCA just south of Chelsea in Aylmer.

Hamsters, cats, dogs and their humans are invited to pose for our cameras. The cost is $10 for a simple photo of your fine pooch or feline – with all proceeds going to the SPCA.

On the 5th I will be working with one of our ProProgram students. Pro Programmer Nathalie will be running the show on December 12th.

HoHoHo! or Woof Woof Woof!

#378 On Assignment Review

Last week students danced with models on our “On Assignment with Andrew Balfour” workshop.

The workshop provided a whirlwind of action as dance models from DanceWithAlana.com performed for the camera. Students Lou and Hagen have submitted a few photos from the session:

#373 Last week’s work

Last week was a busy one. It included:

Photography for Communications Professionals was an all day session on Wednesday hosted at the National Gallery in Ottawa.

Event Photography - Ottawa

Photographing Events for Communications Departments - Ottawa

It’s a day of practical and classroom learning from photo fundamentals, use of flash, covering speeches and events as well as technical photo elements (file types, colour consistency, white balance, etc) and other considerations (consent forms, usage, copyright and archiving issues, etc.)

Students said:

Excellent. Adapts really well to everyone’s level of experience and equipment.

Worth recommending to other amateur communications photogs.

The class was full (eight students) and we have inquiries for the next session on May 24th, 2010.

The Creative Business Seminar was a two day session covering direction for people starting a new business in creative fields. We had 10 participants that created lively discussions and shared experiences from many different people.

Saturday covered elements of business from understanding and evaluating our own strengths to psychology of selling to exercises to develop skills. Sunday took an in depth look at the world of web opportunities.

We’d like to thank the Council for the Arts – Ottawa for their support! The weekend went well. Students said:

“Motivating, stimulating, informative.”

“A great opportunity to learn the basics of starting a creative based business.”

One of the participants wrote a review of the weekend and posted a photo.

#371 New Ottawa Gatineau Photo website and blog

One of our Pro Program students, Nathalie Madore, launched her new photo website and blog on Sunday. She presented the site at the Creative Business Seminar over the weekend. Her site:

NathalieMadore.com

has been under development all fall and benefits from influences of different people.
