Yesterday‘s half speed work day still filled up quickly – I am happy to report the skiing was fabulous and the dogs had a ball.

#221 Rest

It was a busy week last week – working right through the weekend. This week is looking busy, too. That’s a good thing.

So to make sure the batteries stay charged today is a half speed work day. I will be telemark skiing at Camp Fortune for an hour or two and snowshoeing with two dogs for an hour in the afternoon.

I have learned the hard way that fun time off is essential to any healthy business. I have learned many things the hard way! In that vein we developed the Creative Business Seminar – next session in April – where you’ll find many practical ideas about business that you won’t find in text books.

We presented “Photographing Artwork for Promotion” twice at the Ontario Craft Council‘s conference this weekend. It was well received. A review is coming soon.

But for now I have a very important meeting with my skis and some snow:

#218 Craft conference presentation

Coming up this weekend we will be presenting to the Ontario Crafts Council’s Ottawa Business Development Conference – ‘Building Your Successful Craft Career’

Our session covers photography techniques to document artwork suitable for websites, juried shows and promotion. Techniques presented will involve photography fundamentals and ideas to produce stunning photos without breaking the bank.

With simple photo tools and lights you can achieve beautiful documentary photos. Come and visit this weekend!

#211 Sessions Photo Challenge

Last night we ventured out to Winterlude to photograph the ice sculptures as the second night of Sessions Photo Challenge.

We also covered the National Capital Commission’s 60th anniversary celebrations of NATO. Many decorated veterans attended the ceremony and watched the lighting of a special ice sculpture.

It was a great night. Next week we plan to return to Winterlude. Let us know if you would like to join next week’s challenge.

#206 More Student Successes!

In the fall I met Stanley Saganash who enrolled in our Creative Fundamentals photo workshop. An avid photographer, Stanley was interested in making photography part of his work.

Stanley was dedicated! – he drove almost 700 km each way to attend the workshop from Waswanipi in northern Quebec.

He enjoyed the course and enrolled in our Natural Light Portraits course in January. His skills improved again. He now offers a photography service within his community.

#204 Hockey Photography Workshop Complete!

Students met to critique their adventures in the world as working photographers after spending the day shooting the Ottawa 67s as they beat the Erie Otters in the OHL – a feeder league to the NHL.

Students were tired at the end of the shoot. Senses were tingling and camera equipment was on high alert for the afternoon.

Students came with varied backgrounds and for different reasons:

  • kids in hockey or figure skating programs
  • interest in shooting ‘field’ sports
  • ‘love’ hockey
  • interested in pursuing photo work

#199 Portraits follow-up

We finished the Natural Light Portrait workshop last week. It was a good group with two students coming from far, far away. Stanley had a 6.5 hour drive for the course.

I was impressed wirh student’s work. On Saturday afternoon they were assigned to create portraits of four groups they had never met – two small families, a couple and a small business owner. By the end of the session student’s faces showed signs of a challenging but rewarding afternoon!
