#121 The high cost of low-cost photography

Zoom airlines recently announced it has “suspended operations.”

Zoom is, er, was a low-cost alternative to traditional, higher priced air travel. Zoom offered budget flights and reportedly excellent service. Unfortunately, they charged too little for a good thing! People loved Zoom until they got stranded at the airport recently or, like my parents, paid for flights that no longer exist! Speculation was that rising fuel prices squeezed the airline more than it could handle.

What has that got to do with photography? The budget photo business model can lead to the same results as Zoom Airlines. Substitute low cost photo work for Zoom’s low cost flight service and you could encounter the same “suspended operations.”

soaring costs hurt budget businesses!
Avoid pitfalls with solid business training.

Pricing your photo work low can help attract some early sales but it can create problems:

  • client expectations of low cost work. Try raising your prices to sustainable levels after a year of low cost photo service – see what your client says.
  • little breathing room for unexpected expenses like equipment breakdowns or ‘high fuel prices’.
  • industry expectations – If too many people offer budget prices the new norm may be unsustainable wages for photographers. What you charge affects the industry!
  • price too low and your happy customers may be disappointed after they discover you have “suspended operations” because you cannot make ends meet.

Want to stay in business and promote a healthy photography industry? Discover a way to charge fair and realistically sustainable prices for your level of service! This will require:

  • educating your clients to the value of your work
  • saying no when dollars are too low
  • learning how much is too much for the customer

#88 Winners, jazz greats and stunning people

This week at the photoblog of HarryNowell.com we hope to share:

  • news and views of my work at Ottawa Int’l Jazz fest
  • a report on a stunning person’s camera ability
  • new info on copyright
  • a student photo
  • a review of my stock goals
  • and today… the answer and winner of the last week’s photoblog quiz and contest

Last week I showed this photo and asked:

photo quiz
What was the shutter speed used to capture the motion of the swing photo?
What was the approximate aperture?
Where was the camera?

The Answer: I shot this with a slow shutter to get the blur – 15th second and a small aperture – f16 or f22. I used a fixed focal 15mm on a film rangefinder camera – no zoom. Camera was held in my right hand – just plain motion blur.

The Prize Winner: Al G. of Ottawa was the first to correctly provide a good answer. Congratulations Al! He chose this ChelseaGallery.ca photo prize:

#84 Student work

More photos from one of my student’s from the Sport Photo Workshop at the Italian Week Bike Crit over the weekend. James of James Knox Photography is featured today. Other student photos will be featured tomorrow!

Yesterday, I described the event as some of the most challenging shooting conditions for a photographer – lightning, driving rain, and limited shelter! The students did a fantastic job coping with the adversity!

The photos:

Student James Knox following the emotion of the sprint in heavy rain. Notice the grimaces, pumped muscles and beautiful but subtle reflection in the road. Well done, James!

#83 Cycling event was a blast!

The cycling photo workshop was a blast – literally!

This weekend students photographed the annual Ottawa Italian Week Criterion Cycling event. Racers converged from afar to race for prize money and fame.

Both races had sunshine, driving rain and blasts of thunder & lightning. Students learned about the wild world of fast moving sports photography as well as managing gear (successfully) in wet conditions!

#80 Hot, hot, heat.

The wedding was fun and hot!

We had many friends attend – some with their cameras. Dave Trattles performed the official photojournalistic coverage supported by young children wearing official media passes and disposable point and shoot cameras. They had a blast.

We had a short break and are both back to work. We’ll take a break again this summer.

Back at work, I got another request for a custom course. This time from a government agency who are sending a staff to a high profile event – they are sending her on a refresher course.

A typical week this week – next week there will be a pop quiz with a prize at this photo blog to show off four new files being uploaded to ChelseaGallery.ca this week.

#74 Loose Ends

The week has raced by – bursting a bit. Some highlights:

Feist at Ottawa Bluesfest
Feist at Ottawa Bluesfest – ChelseaGallery.ca

  • filing and paperwork – not my favourite
  • I was asked to be a moderator on the fun and large photo news site PhotographyVoter.
  • A really fun  stock assignment for the government was agreed upon in principle – waiting the official go ahead.
  • I am teaching a custom course based on my Urban Landscapes photo course.

A diversion for you today – a story on a man who took a Polaroid a day for 18 years! The story is both fun and sad.

#73 I am not old!!!

It keeps happening.

It happened again on the weekend.

I met a reader of my ‘Exposed!’ articles, blog, etc. and she exclaimed “I thought you were much older!”

Based on my writing people seem to think I am much older than my actual and youthful 39.9 years. And I am not sure why!

To show my youthful complection see some fine photos people have taken of me:

Am I being touchy with my 40th birthday looming!? Dunno. I am perplexed as to why people imagine I am much older than I feel.

Have fun. Celebrate your years,

H
