Boxing Ladies Presentation - 9pm.
For twenty years Dave Trattles has been traveling, by bicycle, and working as a social documentary photographer. His work is about interactions between people, photographed from within the happenings. See the video below - in Hindi and English.
Most of the situations he photographs involve subjects who struggle to retain their sense of identity and purpose within an increasingly globalized culture.
Be they Muslim girl boxers of Calcutta, isolated Canadian communities or unemployed Germans who live as cowboys in east Germany, all of Dave's work has the common thread of ordinary people looking into themselves, their friends, their families. In doing so, they raise themselves above the vagaries of life.
Dave's show features out-takes from travels around rural Canada, Germans who live as cowboys in east Germany and a travelogue of panorama prints from a cycle trip in India.
The show will also feature a presentation of the Boxing Ladies, which is about the story behind the photographs of the girls who are boxing in Calcutta, and how the photographs were presented in the environment that they came from.
The Boxing Ladies is the culmination of two and a half years of effort in community, narrative, exhibition preparation, and promotion. All the time, Trattles was moving towards the goal of a community showing, with the intention of the boxers and the community as the foremost participants.

A social documentary photographer? What's that? Think of photojournalism as producing a single news photo whereas social documentary photography refers to a body of work that represents the social fabric of a people, community or event. If 'photojournalism' is represented as a single word, 'social documentary photography' is an essay.
