What you will learn

Learn some basics of bookbinding while constructing an album to display your artwork or photographs.

The course will include an introduction to the tools, materials and techniques used in bookbinding, and will apply them in making a sample book suitable for photos or artwork.

Variations of this structure will also be examined, and student samples will be constructed as time permits.

Anyone who wants to:

  • learn the tactile craft of binding a book.
  • produce their own book of work.
  • create a system of storing work

Who is Mary McIntyre?

Mary McIntyre is a books conservator who has worked at preserving the national collection of published material at Library and Archives Canada for 20 years.

Mary has followed courses throughout her career with well-known instructors in bookbinding and conservation, and in 2008 received her Certificate of Completion for Foundation Courses in Bookbinding from the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild (CBBAG).

Mary began a local Chapter of CBBAG in Ottawa in 2006, and is now President of the national organization. She teaches whenever she can, and particularly enjoys instructing newcomers to the book arts.

Materials and Equipment Required

Materials fee is included in the registration cost. Bookbinding tool kits will be available for student use. Upon registration, an info sheet detailing other items students need to bring will be distributed.
